We all know what happens if you don’t continually clean. Dirty clothes that keep getting buried by more dirty clothes start to mildew. Power tools that are not cleaned seize up or become dangerous. Dirty campsites attract vermin or worse, bears. It should go without saying that you also need to keep yourself clean.
James 4:7-8 NLT
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
Paul makes it clear in his letter to the Ephesians that husbands need to continually clean their wives.
NLT Ephesians 5:25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.
A clean wife is one who’s desire is to please the Lord and seeks to understand his will.
Ephesians 5:10 NASB
trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:17 NASB
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
These verses began a work in me and my marriage. Made me realize that it was not enough to provide and lead the family in devotions and prayer. That was just like drawing a bath and saying get in. Some may be mature enough to get themselves cleaned up but all too often they jump up out of that tub saying “all clean” but no attention has been paid to all the nooks and crannies. They are wet, but still not clean.
With the pervasive messages from the world, at times I felt guilty for wanting my wife to please me. How crazy is that when God’s word is clear that she was made for her husband and his design is for the wife to please her husband as to the Lord.
For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
